Deep Tissue/Therapeutic Massage
Gretchen’s favorite! This focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and connective tissue. It is beneficial for releasing chronic muscle tension and pains. Pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension/pain in order to reach sub-layer of muscles and fascia(the productive layer surrounding muscles, bones, and joints). There is a possibility that that deep tissue massage can cause the client slight discomfort either during or after the procedure, but this is advised as being entirely normal. In fact, just like going to the gym, the slight feelings of discomfort can actually be embraced as a sign of healing and can make the client feel empowered and stronger within themselves overall. Communication is the key to gain best results without discomfort.
Swedish Massage
This is the most basic method of massage. There are six techniques used to administer Swedish massage, effleurage (long strokes), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), traction, friction, and compression. Swedish massage is geared toward detoxification, increase of circulation which rejuvenates the body, and relaxation.
Sports Massage
Collection of massage techniques performed on athletes or active individuals for the purpose of aiding and recovery or treating pathology. Deeper pressure is applied and stretching (if needed). Benefits may result to improve range of motion, increase speed/distance, and increase recovery with decreased aches/pains. Communication with Gretchen is important to know the timing of your event, pre/post event, in which the techniques and intent will be proper for the individual.
Prenatal/Postinatal Massage
Prenatal massage helps improve circulation, decreases aches/pains, loosens and relaxes the pregnant woman’s body while helping to increase flexibility resulting in less pain during labor and delivery. This is preformed in a side laying position while being supported with pillows. The massage is tailored specifically to the needs of the pregnant woman and their changing bodies. Please talk with your physician for any recommendations before administering massage while pregnant. Postnatal massage helps bring back balance to the woman’s body that has been disrupted by her pregnancy. It also helps improve elasticity of her skin, which has been stretched during pregnancy, as well as bringing back her muscle tone. Moreover, massage aids the mother through possible postpartum depression.
Rotator Cuff Release
Majority of rotator cuff injuries occur due to improper shoulder mechanics. People at high risk: desk jockeys(computer shoulders), athletes (previous or acute injuries), carpenters, golfers, weight lifters, swimmers, massage therapist (yes even us), occupations requiring heavy lifting, people carrying heavy bags (laptops, backpacks, heavy purses, etc.), and anyone performing repetitive motions at the joint, especially overhead motions. Releasing the rotator cuff helps correct dysfunction in the shoulder. Talk with Gretchen to inquire about this service.
Reflexology
Applies gentle pressure to reflex points on the feet and/or hands to bring healing to the body. The heart of reflexology is the theory that each reflex point(zone) corresponds to a particular organ in the body.
Advanced Head, Neck, and Shoulders
The further hands-on study of the cervical/thoracic spinal region is a combination of gentle manual therapy, myofascial release, and cranial sacral therapy along with traction. May result in the release of debilitating pain, improve function, and restore/maintain health.
Stretching
Postural issues are the root cause of most chronic muscular/skeletal conditions. Muscles that are locked short (hyper-tonic) are a principal factor in these conditions. When a muscle is injured, it’s resting length shortens. Failure to integrate skilled stretching results in continued joint compression, re-injury, and frustration. Stretches are integrated with massage and preformed on the table. We recommend wearing short shorts for these sessions.
